CEZA RELIVES TRADITIONAL FILIPINO GAMES AT THE VIRAY FESTIVAL

The CEZA Palaro ng Bayan was successfully conducted by the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA), in collaboration with the Santa Ana Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), on May 26, 2025 at the Santa Ana Municipal Park. Conducted yearly, this activity has been one of the most awaited spectacles during the town’s Viray Festival.

The event gathered 169 enthusiastic players coming from the indigenous people (IPs) communities and 4Ps beneficiaries of barangays Dumasag, Rapuli, Marede, Casambalangan and San Vicente. Ms. Rose Decano, Casambalangan’s parent leader, led the invocation after which Ms. Jesusa Zingapan, CEZA’s Chief Tourism Officer, opened the event.

The CEZA Palaro ng Bayan featured traditional games, which included bunong braso (sanggol), bao race, kadang-kadang, sack race, blowing the flour, tug of war, obstacle race and palosebo. Now on its 10th year, this activity has been hosted by CEZA, in its effort to relive the traditional Filipino street games that have been loved by many before technology took over.

Although the featured games are physical in nature, strategic and synchronized play were still key factors in winning games. With a total claimed prize of twenty two thousand four hundred fifty pesos (P22,450.00) at stake, spectators have witnessed dramatic and nail biting finishes from the players.

Joseph Pattung outclassed his rivals in the bunong braso event while Pablo Nogueras easily clutched in first place in the kadang kadang game. A quick finish to the top with only 9.35 seconds gave Vic Angelo Francia the win in the palosebo. Angie Doniego and family swifly leaped to victory in the sack race contest. Trixie Iniego and family pulled strong in the tug of war section. Remaric  Timtiman and company outran other teams in the obstacle race. Angel Manganaan gracefully raced to claim top spot in the bao race. Rose Decano and Marilyn Norberte won the first and second set of the blowing the flour games.

The various games concluded merrily as each player and team received their respective cash prizes and consolation awards.

With this year’s theme, “Maika-Sangapulo nga Panaglayag: Itultuloy iti Panagkaykaysa tapnon Panagrang-ay Manamnama,” CEZA’s continued support to this annual festivity not only honors Filipino traditions but also exemplifies CEZA’s ongoing commitment to support the local communities within the Cagayan Special Economci Zone and Freeport and maintain camaraderie and strong partnership with the Sta. Ana LGU.
