CEZA at 30: A Legacy of Environmental Stewardship

Volunteers from the Philippine Coast Guard participated in CEZA’s reef cleanup drive.

Marking its 30th anniversary, the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability through the CEZA Eco Love Project, a series of environmental initiatives aligned with the theme “Nature and People, Thriving as One.” These included a coastal cleanup and “Scubasurero” dive on February 25, 2025, followed by a tree-planting activity on February 27, 2025, across four barangays in Santa Ana, Cagayan.

Restoring Coasts and Marine Ecosystems

The coastal cleanup and “Scubasurero” at Port San Vicente united local communities, government agencies, and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in removing waste from shorelines and underwater areas. Beyond removing waste, the event raised awareness of marine pollution and encouraged community action to protect coastal ecosystems.

Greening Santa Ana for Climate Resilience

Two days later, CEZA spearheaded a tree-planting initiative in Tangatan, Sta. Cruz, Palawig, and Casagan, where over 370 native trees were planted to mitigate flooding, erosion, and climate change. By restoring greenery, CEZA strengthens the region’s environmental resilience and promotes biodiversity.

A Commitment Beyond Celebration

Although part of CEZA’s 30th-anniversary activities, these initiatives align with its decades-long mission of sustainability and community engagement.

CEZA Administrator and CEO Sec. Katrina Ponce Enrile emphasized: “Environmental sustainability is a long-term commitment. The Eco Love Project is one of many initiatives we are developing to protect our environment while fostering economic growth.”

Through these efforts, CEZA ensures that both nature and people thrive together, creating a sustainable future for generations to come.

The coastal cleanup focused on San Vicente Beach, a high-traffic area for locals, tourists, and fisherfolk, leading to significant trash accumulation.

The tree-planting activity involved a simultaneous activity in four barangays of Sta. Ana, Cagayan – Tangatan, Sta. Cruz, Palawig and Casagan.

Despite the rainy, windy weather on February 25, 2025, the coastal and reef cleanups proceeded successfully, drawing a strong turnout of participants.
